The milestones were stone pillars standing at regular distances along roads indicating the distance to various destinations. In the city of Rome, there was the so-called golden milestone from which distances were calculated. Every milestone was numbered and it also provided information on who had it created.
Milestones characterised by shape unity were built along roads of the Roman Empire.
